The MEA planned to construct an underground substation in Klong Toey District to connect with the existing and future distribution systems. This pilot project on construction of an underground substation in a congested area is the first of its type in Thailand. The objectives were to reduce noise pollution, ensure public safety and mitigate environmental impacts. The project included construction of a four-story underground building with 22 meter-depth and installation of four power transformers with capacity of 115/69/24 kV–60 MVA, switchgears with capacity of 115 and 69 kV, and other control systems, i.e. fire safety, building service, and electrical grounding systems.
